The water work is part of the training of rescue dogs and hunting dogs in different forms . Today it is also operated as a competitive dog sport.

Water work as a dog sport

When water work as a dog sport has a dog objects out of the water fetch and bring them to a person or a boat. Other exercises include bringing “helpless” people ashore or to a boat. The dogs have to prove their fitness by swimming while working in the water. In addition to the exercises in the water, agricultural work in the form of subordination to water work is also part of the work.

Particularly suitable dog breeds

The dog breeds Newfoundland , Landseer , Golden Retriever , Labrador , Leonberger and Polski Owczarek Podhalanski and other water dogs are particularly suitable for water work.

Organizations

In North America, water labor labor exams have been offered since 1972. For most European countries the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) is decisive. In Germany, the Association for the German Dog Industry (VDH) is responsible for international tests within the FCI . Since 2012, water work has been recognized as a dog sport in the German Association of Working Dog Sports Clubs (DVG). Water work is part of the rescue dog sport, but not part of the work and training of the rescue dogs .

Water work tests

Each country has its own examination regulations, which are largely identical. A water work book is a prerequisite for participating in water work tests. This water workbook is issued by the DVG in Germany. All national and international water work tests recognized by the FCI are entered in the water work book.

The DVG's water work exams are divided into water work diplomas A, B, C, D. In addition, a team rescue diploma can be obtained. However, these diplomas do not replace the water rescue rescue dog exams . The exact descriptions can be found in the DVG regulations.

Water work in the fitness test for hunting dogs

Hunting dogs are also used to hunt waterfowl. In order to prepare them for this task, they are trained accordingly and have to pass an examination in water work as part of the usability test. Sometimes live ducks are used, which is controversial.

Water work with Dachshunds

For dachshunds , water work is part of the training to become a working dog . A draft examination regulation (PO) for an international work championship (CACIT) at the FCI is available.

Waterwork at the Retriever Field Trials

For dogs of retriever breeds, there are work trials in the field (field trials). Water work is also part of these tests.
