The park-like cemetery was laid out in 1874. Since 1911, the year Pfersee was incorporated into Augsburg, the cemetery has been in the Augsburg city area. Extensive new construction measures were carried out from 1913 to 1915: a crematorium , a civil servants' residence and administration building, an Art Nouveau funeral hall , a corpse storage hall, a cremation facility , a neo-baroque gate and the cemetery wall were built. Over the years the cemetery has been enlarged again and again.

On September 10, 1950, the honor grove in the Westfriedhof was inaugurated in memory of the 235 concentration camp victims † 1945 who rested here. The memorial consists of stones from the quarry of the Flossenbürg concentration camp .

A grave field for stillborn children has existed in the cemetery since 2007 .

The park character of the Westfriedhof is underlined by smaller avenues.
