Bebo Wager

Josef "Bebo" Wager (born December 29, 1905 in Augsburg ; † August 12, 1943 in Munich ) was the founder of a resistance group against the Nazi regime .

From 1933 to 1942 Wager fought in the resistance against National Socialism . In June 1933, together with friends from youth, sports and education associations of the banned social democratic party in Augsburg, Kempten (Allgäu) , Ulm , Günzburg and other Swabian cities, he founded a resistance group that later called itself "Revolutionary Socialists".

Life

Youth and family

His parents were Josef and Emma Wager (née Gellinger) from Augsburg. His father returned from the First World War as a war invalid and no longer able to work.

Wager began vocational training as a lathe operator, which he completed at Riedinger in Augsburg. In 1923 he became a member of the metal workers' association and in 1927 moved to the Augsburg-Nürnberg (MAN) machine factory in Augsburg. At MAN he initially worked as a lathe operator and from 1929 as an electrician.

At the age of 23 he married his wife Lina. The children Heinz, Hanna and Helmut emerged from the marriage.

Political activities

From 1923 on, Bebo Wager became politically active. At the age of 17 he joined the socialist workers' youth and worked as a local group leader for the Jakobervorstadt district in the youth committee of the Social Democratic Party of Germany .

In 1934 his engagement for the resistance group "Revolutionary Socialists" began.

Arrest and death

Bebo Wager was arrested on April 12, 1942. The trial opened on March 22, 1943. In the main hearing on May 27, 1943 in Innsbruck he was sentenced to death by the People's Court for high treason . On August 12, 1943, he was executed in the Stadelheim prison in Munich.

Initially, Bebo Wager was buried together with Hermann Frieb , the head of the illegal social democracy in Munich, in the Perlacher Forst cemetery. In 1947 he was exhumed and buried in a grave of honor in the Westfriedhof in Augsburg .

Posthumous honors

A street in Augsburg's Pfersee district was named in honor of Bebo Wager. A vocational school center in Augsburg also bears his name. The Arbeiterwohlfahrt Augsburg runs a facility for mentally ill people named after Bebo Wager.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the Augsburg SPD, the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) Augsburg and the AWO Schwaben awarded the Bebo Wager Prize. This was awarded to student projects that dealt with National Socialism.
