The Western Melchior Islands together with the Eastern Melchior Islands form the group of Melchior Islands in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of Graham Land in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . They consist of small, icy islands and cliffs west of the strait The Sound . The largest of the Western Melchior Islands are the Lambda and Gamma Islands .
The name probably goes back to scientists from the British Discovery Investigations , who roughly mapped these islands in 1927. The naming was based on that of the entire archipelago, whose namesake is the French Vice Admiral Jules Bernard François Melchior (1844-1908).
