The Lambda Island ( English Lambda Iceland ) is an island in the Palmer Archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . In the group of the Melchior Islands , it is located immediately northwest of the Delta Island .
Participants of the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of the polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot named it as Île Sourrieu after Bertrand Sixte Henri Sourrieu (1853-1921), captain and later admiral of the French Navy . However, this name did not prevail. Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped it in 1927 and named it after the Greek letter lambda, based on the naming of other islands in the group . The Lambda Island was measured during Argentine expeditions in 1942, 1943 and 1948. In Argentina it is also known as Isla Primero de Mayo . It is named after the research vessel Primero de Mayo , which was used on the Argentine expedition in 1942. In 1942, the first Argentine lighthouse in Antarctica, the Faro Primero de Mayo , went into operation. It has been protected by the Antarctic Treaty as a Historic Site and Monument HSM-29 since 1972 .
