The Faro Primero de Mayo is an Argentine lighthouse in the Antarctic . It was built in 1942 on the Lambda Island in the Palmer Archipelago off the northwest coast of the Antarctic Peninsula .
History and architecture
In 1942 Argentina undertook its first Antarctic expedition. The 1888 on the Kiel shipyard of Georg Howaldt built steamship ARA Primero de Mayo , a transport ship of the Argentine Navy , sailed under the command of Captain Alberto José Oddera (1900-1965) to the South Shetland Islands , the Melchior and the Argentine Islands . These were formally taken into possession and have since formed the core of the Antarctic territory claimed by Argentina . In February the Faro Primero de Mayo was built on the Eastern Cape of the Lambda Island, which the Argentines renamed isla 1º de Mayo . It was also named after the expedition ship and put into operation on March 1, 1942.
The lighthouse is an eleven meter high red iron structure in the shape of a truncated pyramid . In its second segment there is an orange painted storage container. In the Antarctic summer 2001/2002, acetylene was switched to electrical operation with a luminous intensity of 75 cd . A dry battery is used , which is changed every two years. The identifier of the Faro Primero de Mayo is a white flash with a period of eight seconds.
At the request of Argentina, the lighthouse was placed under the protection of the Antarctic Treaty as a Historic Site and Monument HSM-29 in 1972 .
