Morten Wetland (born May 12, 1951 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian diplomat , politician of the Norwegian Labor Party and lawyer.

Life

Wetland studied law at the University of Oslo and graduated in 1976. He first worked for the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 1978/19 he worked as a judge at a court in Grimstad . Wetland then joined the Norwegian diplomatic service and was second secretary at the Norwegian embassy in Germany in Bonn from 1980 to 1983 . From 1983 to 1985 he worked again at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo and from 1985 to 1989 as a special advisor in the office of the Norwegian Prime Minister. In 1989/90 he was Deputy Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , briefly returned in 1990 as a Special Advisor and then from 1991 Director General of the Department for International Affairs. In 1996 he became State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. In 1997 he took over the position of editor at Gyldendal ASA in Oslo. From 1998 to 2003 he was ambassador at the Norwegian Embassy in Germany .

From 2003 to 2005 he worked as Senior Vice President for European Affairs of the Norwegian state-owned company Statkraft . In 2005 he became State Secretary in the Office of the Norwegian Prime Minister ( Statsministerens kontor ) until he took over the role of Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations in New York in 2008 . From 2012 to 2018 he worked as a partner in the consulting company First House .

Wetland has been awarded the Order of Saint Olav . He is married and has two children.
