The museum for meteorology and aerology, run on a voluntary basis by the Wettermuseum eV association, is located in Lindenberg , a district of the Tauche community in the Oder-Spree district ( Brandenburg ). The founding of the association and museum in 2006 was a reaction to the positive response from the public to the 100th anniversary of the Lindenberg Meteorological Observatory of the German Weather Service , which is located nearby. There is no other museum location in Germany that is committed to the collection, preservation and communication of meteorology as a whole. The Lindenberg site can be restored thanks to the work of the observatory founder Richard Assmann (initiator of Berlin's scientific aviation , co-discoverer of the stratosphere ), the establishment of the aviation warning service for Germany (forerunner of air traffic control ) , which is documented here in 1911, or the world record for hang-gliding on August 1st, which has not yet been touched 1919 with 9740 m convey the history of meteorology very authentically. Numerous nationally and internationally known meteorologists have worked in Lindenberg, such as B. Alfred Wegener , Hugo Hergesell , Arthur Berson and Harald Koschmieder .

history

The association »Wettermuseum e. V. «was founded on September 15, 2006 at 4 Lindenberger Schulstrasse. The first exhibition on the subject of meteorology was built in an extension of the former school and could be viewed there until 2013. Two monuments, the so-called Ballonhalle 2 and the Winchhaus 2 , were saved from decay by the association through purchase and used as exhibition rooms after the renovation. The stone barrack of the former radiosonde test center , which is located next to the balloon hall and the winch house , was also bought by the association and, after two years of construction, became the visitor center of the weather museum. The financial resources of the purchases come from grants, donations, membership fees and entrance fees.

The museum

Visitor center

Weather museum Lindenberg - part of the permanent exhibition in the visitor center

The modern visitor center, which was opened to the public in May 2015 after two years of construction, shows the main developments and events in meteorology from around 100 years and the meteorological measurement methods in the approx. 160 m² permanent exhibition "From Weather to Climate". The beginnings and advances in meteorology up to today's science and research are presented. Measuring instruments for measuring radiation, temperature, air pressure, air humidity, wind strength and direction, cloud cover and precipitation can be seen in easy-to-understand, interactive installations and projections.

Balloon hall 2

The balloon hall was built in 1936 and was then used to fill the balloons and to store the tethered balloons and kites. Today this hall with a "Gothicized" pointed barrel roof in the style of the Zollinger roof is a listed building. In March 2007, the balloon hall was restored in accordance with a historic preservation order with lottery funds and a 96-hour campaign by the rbb. Since then, it has housed a comprehensive exhibition on historical ascent techniques in the free atmosphere, for example kites and radiosondes. There is also an internationally unique exhibition in the hall of meteorological kites, which were used for research and weather forecasting from around 1895. A Grundscher regulating kite, developed in 1929, was still flown in the middle of the 20th century and is in its original state.

The winch house was used between 1936 and 1945 in certain wind directions (east wind) for the ascent of weather kites and tethered balloons. It was renovated in 2011 by the local company Metallbau Krüger and made available to the public again in May 2012. Today it is a listed building.

Climate fence

The climate fence shows how the temperature has changed in the more than 100 years of weather records in Lindenberg. Every year another bar is attached to visualize the level of the annual mean temperature.
