history

The clinkered former weather station in Cuxhaven from the 1920s consists of a three-storey administration building with a hipped roof and a distinctive open staircase and a six-storey octagonal tower.

The weather station, which used to be manned daily from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. as a weather service and meteorological station, reported regularly to the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach am Main and the regional headquarters in Hamburg. The control room was of local importance for professional and hobby shipping or for citizens who needed information about local weather events for insurance after storm damage.

The message from the head of the Cuxhaven weather station on the morning of February 16, 1962, i.e. before the storm surge in 1962 on the night of February 16 to 17, 1962: "In the next 18 to 24 hours, full storm from west, later Northwest. First high tide at 11:07 am at least 1.80 meters, second high tide at 11:33 pm more than two meters above normal. In my private opinion, a worrying situation is imminent that threatens to reach dangerous proportions. "

The weather station has only been an automated sensor station since 2017. Currently (2020) the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks Branch Cuxhaven has its seat here.
