investment

The sanctuary is located on a small island in the southern Gulf Islands and is about 25 km as the crow flies east-northeast of the town of Ladysmith . Immediately west of the island is Ruxton Island and south of Pylades Island and a little further east of Valdes Island . The protected area includes the water areas within the protected area boundaries, as well as Whaleboat Island . It includes the entire island as well as the surrounding waters. Of the 11 hectares of protected area, 4 hectares are land and 7 hectares are water and tidal beaches.
The park is a category II protected area ( national park ).

history

As with almost all provincial parks in British Columbia, it is also true that long before the area was settled by European immigrants or it was part of a park, it was a hunting and fishing area of various First Nations tribes , here the Lyackson .

Before the island became a nature reserve, its name was Eagle Island .

Flora and fauna

British Columbia's ecosystem is divided into different biogeoclimatic zones using the Biogeoclimatic Ecological Classification (BEC) Zoning System . Biogeoclimatic zones are characterized by a fundamentally identical or very similar climate and the same or very similar biological and geological conditions. This results in a very similar population of plants and animals in the respective zones. Within this system, the park area is assigned to the Coastal Douglas Fir Zone with the Moist Maritime Subzone .

There are no stocks of larger and older trees on the island, as there was a booming timber industry on the islands in the 1940s and this island was also completely cut down.

Cliff oystercatchers and pigeon duck breed on the island . Small marine islands such as Whaleboat Island are important habitats as, due to their isolated location and size, they are usually not inhabited by larger land predators. Predators found here are seals , California sea lions or Steller sea lions .

Neighboring parks

There are other provincial parks in the vicinity of this park. To the north-northwest of the park, on neighboring De Courcy Island , is the Pirates Cove Marine Provincial Park . And on the northern tip of Valdes Island is Wakes Cove Provincial Park .

activities

The park has no tourist infrastructure. Although it is strictly forbidden in provincial parks, wild camping and making fires are permitted in some places.
