action

The successful writer Theo borrowed the apartment from his best friend Valentin so that he could meet the attractive waitress Mörli undisturbed after his wife separated from him. In the middle of the night he called Valentin from there with panic in his voice and asked him to come quickly.

Once in his apartment, Valentin sees the waitress lying motionless on the floor. Theo says that he slapped her half for fun, half in an argument and that she fell on the edge of the table. He asks his friend to help him get rid of the woman, but when the two of them want to get to work, she jumps up and flees upstairs. Thereupon the author with heart disease grabs his chest and sinks to the floor.

In flashbacks, the prehistory is now illuminated from different perspectives and it shows that, in addition to Valentin's wife, a former “policeman” and his assistant “Snowflake” are involved in the matter, which involves a unique manuscript, high insurance sums and millions -Debt goes.

production

The film was made in collaboration with Sky Deutschland and will be broadcast on television for the first time on Sky Cinema HD . The production was funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg , the FFA-Filmförderungsanstalt and the German Filmförderfonds DFFF .

criticism

The film received mostly very positive reviews. Various German media unanimously highlight the "surprising twists and turns" in the plot. Müller's debut work is a “breathtaking film” that leads the audience - “spectacularly staged” - “in an amusing way by the nose”.

Rüdiger Suchsland writes on artechock that the film is “an exciting work that, both formally and in its story, breaks the boundaries of German cinema coziness, which relies on picture narration and captivating surprise effects. Classic merges with pop in this bloody marriage drama, trained on role models like Quentin Tarantino and Park Chan-wook - which was finally a wild comedy, without fecal humor, but with puns and running gags ”.

Harald Mühlbeyer at the cinema: “Müller not only studied the - let's say - Coens and Tarantinos of this world, but obviously also the originals of Film Noir. He condenses all the elements of the Black Series into his 75-minute film narration, almost a kind of anthology: light and shadow, lurking immorality, betrayed trust, the naive straight man, some femmes fatales, a perfidious murder plan and various counterplans. And always an atmosphere of fragility, the fragility of what was previously considered reality ”. […] “With a good sense of timing, Müller lets the cinematic moods change, sometimes pop-colorful, then darkly shady, sometimes flooded with sunlight, then almost monochrome. He knows about the standards, yes, clichés of his genre and uses them safely ”.

Peter Claus reports for Getidan from the Max Ophüls Prize: “Huge jubilation - quite rightly! - earned 'Sex & Crime' from author and director Paul Florian Müller. Here, finally again, figures bursting with vigor and juiciness show off women independence and strength and are not reduced to bed companions. "[...]" A lot of fun, very intelligent, a masterpiece! "

Ulrich Sonnenschein from epd Film uses a quote from Sex & Crime for his assessment of the “uniquely twisted murder, robbery and blackmail story” : “Logic, always logic, it depends on completely different things, on mood, dialogues, subtext .. “. The film relies on "situational comedy, drastic scenes of violence and charming actors". The timing was right and the staging was "skillful [...] with different time levels".

That this reduced-effect, over-the-top “variant of the cinema by Michel Gondry ” works “without any annoyance” despite minor weaknesses, is “mainly due to the actors”.

Awards

In addition to the Max Ophüls Prize, Sex & Crime was also nominated for the Bunte New Faces Award for “Best Debut Film”.

The film magazine Cinema nominated Sex & Crime as "best film (national)" and Fabian Busch as "best actor (national) for the Jupiter Award 2017.
