What is love? is a pop song released in November 1983 by British musician Howard Jones and also appeared on his album Human's Lib .
Music and lyrics
It is a mid-tempo synth pop song with echoes of the New Wave . In the lyrics, the singer asks the question about love: “What is love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway?” (“What is love anyway, does anyone love someone else?”)
Emergence
Jones wrote the song with Bill Bryant and produced it with Rupert Hine for the number one album Human's Lib . Originally the song was only called Love? and was included on the five-track demo tape that Jones recorded in 1982. At that time, Jones used the question mark motif more often, for example behind his name on posters.
Publication and reception
The single was released according to the insertion in Jones' official music video on November 26, 1983, other sources give November 18, 1983. It reached number two in the British, sixth in the German , 24th on the Swiss charts and tenth in Norway and Sweden . On the B-side is the song It Just Doesn't Matter . An extended version with a length of 6:27 minutes also appeared on the 12 ″ -maxi single and with a length of 6:34 minutes on the album. Other similarly long versions were titled as Extended Mix or New Extended and appeared on various compilations .
Music video
The music video was shot in Paris and shows Jones in the city and in a park.
Cover versions
In 1985 Purple Schulz quoted the song in his song Boys in Love . There are other cover versions of Milk & Sugar ( What Is Love (Anyway) ), Jason Donovan and Barbara Dickson , among others .
