Whitney Island is an island in the northern section of George VI Sound off the Rymill Coast of the Palmerland on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is the second largest and most easterly of the Rhyolite Islands .
The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1977 after Farrell W. Whitney (1929-2014) of the United States Navy , who worked for the VXE-6 squadron at McMurdo Station and in Christchurch , New Zealand between 1958 and 1971 .
