Widmannstätten is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon in the south of Mare Smythii . The crater is flooded by the Laven des Mare and covered in the western part by the Kiess crater .

The crater was officially named in 1973 by the IAU after the Austrian scientist Alois von Beckh-Widmanstätten .
