biography

Widmeier was appointed mayor of Haunstetten in 1919, a then independent municipality on the outskirts of Augsburg (incorporated in 1972 as part of the regional reform). In 1933 Widmeier resigned from the SPD and from then on held office as a candidate for the NSDAP. With the exception of a two-year hiatus after the Second World War, he retained the office of mayor until his death. At that time he was considered the longest serving mayor in Bavaria.

During his tenure, Haunstetten was promoted to town (1952). In the same year Widmeier was made an honorary citizen of Haunstetten. In the 1920s and 1930s, Widmeier encouraged the settlement of industrial companies and increased Haunstetten's population noticeably.
