Richard Friedemann Goßlau (usual: Friedemann Goßlau; born April 13, 1929 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 8, 2018 in Quedlinburg ) was a Protestant pastor of the cathedral parish in Quedlinburg. He was instrumental in the repatriation of the Quedlinburg cathedral treasure .

Life

Goßlau was born in Frankfurt am Main as the son of a pastor and a lawyer and grew up in Tangermünde . He studied Protestant theology at the Kirchliche Hochschule Berlin-Zehlendorf , in Heidelberg and in Basel . In Basel he was coined by Karl Barth .

He passed the church exams in 1953 and 1955 in Halle (Saale) . After his ordination on May 22, 1955, he was first assistant preacher, and from the following year pastor at the church in Wanzer in the Stendal district ( restricted area ).

In 1958 Goßlau wrote a letter to Karl Barth together with Pastor Reinhard Carstens, in which they asked "for an opinion on the Christian existence in the communist-led states". In response, the “Letter to a Young Pastor in the German Democratic Republic” appeared. It was only published as a single print in Zurich in 1958; reprinting was prohibited in the GDR .

From 1965 until his retirement in 1993, Goßlau was a pastor in Quedlinburg. There he was also a founding member of the Rotary Club . His marriage to his wife had three children.

His successor in the office of cathedral priest was Ekkehard Steinhäuser.

Connection to the Quedlinburg Cathedral Treasure

The Quedlinburg Cathedral Treasure was relocated to the outskirts of Quedlinburg during the Second World War, as a result of which parts fell into the hands of an American soldier. After his death, some of the pieces that were believed to be lost reappeared in an auction house. On January 6, 1991, Goßlau decided that the agreement on the repatriation of parts of the Quedlinburg cathedral treasure for an initial compensation of at least one million US dollars would be signed. He referred to the symbolic connection of Epiphany Day with the Three Kings and the three representatives of the US Department of the Interior, the German State Cultural Foundation and “his” church.

Honors

In 1998 he received honorary citizenship of the city of Quedlinburg. In November 2001 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit by Federal President Johannes Rau for his services to the return of the cathedral treasure . He received it in April 2002 from the then Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt , Reinhard Höppner .
