The Wiegand WM-1 is a single-seat glider that was designed by Heinz Wiegand and Eckard Möllendorf in the 1970s. Thanks to the interchangeable chassis, it could be used in both the club and standard classes.

history

After his active time at Akaflieg Braunschweig, Ulrich Wieland designed the aerodynamic concept of a glider for series production by a Bremen entrepreneur. Eckard Möllendorf, also the old man of the Braunschweig family, made load and strength calculations and later designed the wing. The project stagnated due to economic reasons and was continued by Heinz Wiegand from mid-1978. The prototype with the registration number D-4441 was flown for the first time on May 24, 1980 by Jochen König at the Nörvenich airfield . The subsequent flight by employees of the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt and pilots with different flight experience at the summer meeting of idaflieg 1980 in Aalen-Elchingen confirmed very good flight characteristics. For health reasons Wiegand was unable to start series production .

construction

The cantilever wing monoplane with a rectangular trapezoidal wing was built in GRP - semi-monocoque construction . With the FX  profiled 61-184 airfoil with upward outgoing Schempp-Hirth airbrakes is like the T-tail GRP foam a sandwich , the outer surfaces of -1 degree side set . The 2.50 m height stabilizer is provided with the Wortmann profile FX 71-L-150/25, the vertical stabilizer with a 13.5% thick NACA profile . So that the aircraft could be used in gliding competitions in the club or standard class, the club version had a rigid 5-inch wheel in contrast to the version with a retractable 360 × 130 wheel.
