Idaflieg
The Idaflieg (short for Interest Group of German Academic Aviation Groups eV) is the umbrella organization of the researching Akafliegs in Germany, it represents them externally and organizes the cooperation between the Akafliegs as well as with external research institutions such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR) .
Founding members were the academic flying groups from Aachen , Berlin , Braunschweig , Danzig , Darmstadt , Dresden , Hanover , Köthen, Munich and Stuttgart during a meeting of the Rhönt in the early 1920s .
Every year Idaflieg organizes the Idaflieg summer meeting at the Aalen-Elchingen airfield , where the flight characteristics and performance of glider types and prototypes of the Akafliegs are tested in flight tests .
Idaflieg is internationally recognized through the flight performance measurements carried out jointly with the Institute for Flight Guidance (IFF) of the TU Braunschweig and the DLR . The systematic flight characteristics investigations of the Idaflieg go back to Hans Zacher , after whom these measurements were named as " Zachern ". The results of the flight tests of the summer meeting as well as the degree of development of ongoing projects are presented at annual winter meetings at different locations.
As a sponsor of joint advanced training measures, Idaflieg offers its members a design seminar with the support of senior designers from the German glider manufacturers. There are regular courses for aviation training and further education (alpine flight, beginner training , aerobatics , cross-country flying ) and every three years a glider competition of in-house designs is held at the Kammermark airfield .
The association presents itself to a wider audience at the ILA aviation trade fairs in Berlin and Aero in Friedrichshafen every year . The results of the research and development work are published annually in the Idaflieg report booklet.
