The Wiembecketeich , including Upper pond called, is the catchment area of the river Weser belonging Wiembecke fed and is located west of the rock group Externsteine in Horn-Bad Meinberg and east of the hill Bärenstein .

The construction of the pond goes back to Princess Pauline zur Lippe , who wrote to the Detmold District Council on December 2, 1814: “Serenissima Regens have graciously resolved that a large fish pond should be created at the Externsteine to beautify the area (... ) “This initially failed due to the objection of the miller of the municipal upper mill.

A first lake was created in 1837 and was navigated by rowing boats. In 1934/1935 the lake was drained to remodel the area around the stones. The lower pond was created to compensate for this .

After the end of the Second World War, the lake was rebuilt. The decision to do so was taken in 1951.
