from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wieslaw Smetek (* 1955 in Łobżenica , Poland ) is a Polish painter and illustrator who has designed title pages, especially for the print media Die Zeit , Die Welt , Der Stern , Cicero and other titles. He lives in Germany.

Life

Wieslaw Smetek, who was born in Poland, first completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer at the Art High School in Bromberg with Stanislaw Matuszczak. He graduated from the Art Academy in Gdansk in 1981.

In 1990 he came to Germany on an artist's visa and settled near Bremerhaven to prepare an exhibition there. After that, however, he did not return to Poland, but looked for a new field of activity to stay with his family in Germany. He applied with his illustrations to the magazines Stern and Der Spiegel and immediately received orders from them. In 1999 Die Zeit was added, for which he mainly illustrated the front pages. Orders from Cicero , GEO and Süddeutsche Zeitung followed .

For the weekly newspaper Die Zeit alone , Wieslaw Smetek produced over 600 illustrations between 2001 and 2014, including over 230 cover illustrations.

Wieslaw Smetek lives and works today (2017) in the south of Hamburg.

plant

Anyone who wants to surprise the reader again and again and shake them up with new perspectives must, like Smetek, keep a fresh perspective; he wants to look at the world with naive eyes. If you study his illustrations, you will immediately see: Smetek sees reality differently - playful, flexible, elastic. Sometimes just like a child.

I don't know anyone else who can think of something so impressive on almost any topic from politics, business, knowledge, culture and society.
