Alice Saunier-Seïté
Alice Louise Saunier-Seïté (birth name: Alice Louise Saunier ; born April 26, 1925 in Saint-Jean-le-Centenier , Département Ardèche ; † August 4, 2003 in Paris ) was a French geographer , historian , university teacher and politician of the Parti républicain (PR), who was State Secretary and the first and so far only Minister for Universities between 1978 and 1981. In 1981 she was also Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister for Family and Women for a short period. She was also the first female dean and rector of a university in France.
Life
Studies, professor, dean and rector
Alice Saunier completed her schooling at the Lycée de Tournon , and entered this time in contact with the resistance movement of the Resistance . She then began to study oriental languages at the École spéciale des langues orientales , from which she graduated with a diploma. She then worked at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) between 1958 and 1963 and obtained a doctorate in geography (Doctorat ès lettres) in 1963 . She then became a Maître de conférences lecturer in geography at the University of Rennes , where she took over a professorship in geography in 1965. In 1968 she became dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Brest , making her the first woman dean in France.
After Alice Saunier held a professorship at the University of Paris V (Université Paris-Descartes) between 1969 and 1970 , she switched to the newly founded University of Paris XI (Université Paris-Sud) , where she was director of the Institut Universitaire de from 1970 to 1973 Technology (IUT) in Sceaux . In 1973 she became rector of the Académie de Reims , making her the first woman to be rector of a university in France.
State Secretary and Minister
On August 28, 1976, Alice Saunier-Seïté was appointed Secretary of State for Universities (Secrétaire d'État aux universités) in the first Barre cabinet and held this office in the second Barre cabinet until January 10, 1978. Then she was appointed by decree appointed Minister for Universities (Ministre des universités) on January 10, 1978 . She also held this ministerial office in the third Barre cabinet until the dissolution of the university ministry on March 4, 1981. She was the first and so far only minister for universities. In 1980, against opposition from students and staff , the University of Paris VIII was relocated from Vincennes to Saint-Denis on its orders . After the dissolution of the University Ministry, they took over on March 4, 1981 after the resignation of Monique Pelletier the post of Minister attached to the Prime Minister for Family and Women (Ministre délégué auprès du ministre Premier, chargé de la famille et de la condition féminine) , the she served until the end of Barre's term on May 14, 1981.
After leaving the government, Alice Saunier-Seïté was a professor at the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (CNAM) between 1981 and 1994 , where she was the first woman to take up a chair at this renowned Grande école . In addition to her teaching activities, she was a member of the Paris City Council from 1983 to 2002 , where she initially dealt with traffic, police and security issues before she was later chairman of the city planning committee. She was also involved in the National Movement of Local Politicians (Mouvement des élus locaux) , of which she was chair from 1990 to 1998.
Alice Saunier-Seïté, who was a recognized historian of her time alongside Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie , Marc Fumaroli and others, became a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in 1995 as the successor to the late Bernard Chenot . She was married twice, the first marriage, which was dissolved, to EJ Picard, and the second marriage to Jérome Seïté, who died before her.

In addition to her teaching and political career, Alice Saunier-Seïté wrote numerous books that dealt with geographical and historical topics, but also with personalities such as François-Antoine Boissy d'Anglas , François II. De Tournon and Maria von Courtenay . Her works include:
