Alpinistic work

Mazeaud has been among the best mountaineers in Europe since the 1950s. Many first ascents, such as the Franzosenweg in 1959 on the north face of the Western Zinne , are due to him. International top mountaineers like Walter Bonatti , Toni Hiebeler and Toni Kinshofer were his mountain partners, which was unusual for a French mountaineer at the time.

In 1961 Mazeaud was involved in the Frêney tragedy , in which his rope mates Antoine Vieille , Pierre Kohlmann and Robert Guillaume as well as the Italian Andrea Oggioni were killed. It took Mazeaud a year to recover from the frostbite he had suffered.

In the following years Mazeaud undertook many climbing tours, on which he succeeded in numerous first ascents. He also undertook a number of expeditions, one to the Karakoram in 1965 and the first one to Mount Everest in 1971, led by Norman Dyhrenfurth .

In 1978 mountaineers led by Mazeaud and mountaineers led by Karl Maria Herrligkoffer joined forces on a Franco-German Mount Everest expedition. In the course of this undertaking, Mazeaud reached the summit on October 15, 1978 together with Kurt Diemberger . Two hours earlier, Jean Afanassieff and Nicolas Jaeger had ensured the first French summit success on Mount Everest.

First ascents

Mazeaud, René Desmaison , Pierre Kohlmann and Bernard Lagesse were the first rope teams to climb the western pinnacle over the north face in 1959 . Their route is also called the French Way. In 1960 Mazeaud and Kohlmann opened a new route on the Aiguille du Peigne . In 1963 the first ascent of Montblanc du Tacul followed over the north-east face. Mazeaud reached the summit of the Aiguille de Blaitière twice in 1964 , one time over the west face and the other time over the east face. In 1967 he climbed the Aiguille du Peigne again , this time over the north-east wall.

Movies

In 1972, the alpine drama from 1961 on the Frêney central pillar was filmed by Lothar Brandler under the title Der Blitz - Inferno am Montblanc . Mazeaud plays himself in this film.
