Impfingen is located north of Tauberbischofsheim on the right foot of the slope of the Taubertal and has an old settlement core with dense development around the "plan", the old town center. New development areas in the Gewannen Am Staat ( 1954/55) and Lange Steig (1958) as well as in four construction phases in the Gewannen Unteres Haubenlöchlein (1968-2017) were created in an irregular ground plan .

The village Impfingen ( ) and the residential area Hohenstrasse ( ) belong to the district of the former municipality Impfingen . The Taubertal cycle path leads past the place. Beyond the village borders Tauberbischofsheim in the south , Hochhausen in the north-west, Werbach in the north and Großrinderfeld in the north-east .

There are the following protected areas and natural monuments in the Impfinger district (see also: List of natural monuments in Tauberbischofsheim ):

history

middle Ages

Origins of the settlement

In the middle of the 12th century Impfingen belonged partly to the Counts of Hohenlohe and partly to the Counts of Rieneck in Grünsfeld . Impfingen was first mentioned in a document in 1309. However, it can be assumed that the place is older, as a Franconian grave cemetery was discovered on the southern outskirts, which was dated between the 6th century and the second half of the 7th century .

The spelling of the place name has changed several times over the centuries: In 1320 it was mentioned as Ymphenkein or Umphenkeyn as the oldest spelling of Impfingen. In 1365 the place was called Umpfinken , probably with reference to a personal name. Other spellings are: "Umpfigheim" and "Umpfingheim" (1578 each), "Umpicheim", "Umpfenkein", "Umpfheikein" or "Ympffigkheim".

Impfingen was once one of the places in the Mainz area around Tauberbischofsheim left to the Lords of Zimmer. Therefore, in 1320, when the marriage property was temporarily ceded to the Margraves of Baden, it fell back to the Counts of Rieneck and finally came to Rieneck, Leuchtenberg via Pfalz or Hanau (compare the history of Grünsfeld).

Lost place Fahrental and the second village saint

When the town of Fahrental , located between Impfingen and Tauberbischofsheim, was finally given up, its last inhabitants moved to nearby Impfingen. Therefore Impfingen is one of the few places in southern Germany that has two village saints. On the one hand the village saint St. Nikolaus, on the other hand the village saint St. Jakobus (see also the Jakobusbrunnen with Jakobus statue on the "map", the old town center) as the second local patron, who was added to the village together with the inhabitants of the abandoned settlement Fahrental .

Modern times

In the 16th century the Jewish community in Impfingen was established and existed until the beginning of the 20th century.

After the Thirty Years' War , Impfingen came to Würzburg, which also claimed tithing sovereignty in the 17th and 18th centuries , but which Mainz continued to claim for Tauberbischofsheim. The place was fortified in the late Middle Ages . In 1804 Impfingen came to Salm-Reifferscheid and in 1806 it fell under Baden sovereignty.

From 1813 the place belonged to the District Office Tauberbischofsheim , from 1840 to the District Office Gerlachsheim and from 1849 again to the District Office Tauberbischofsheim, which became part of the Tauberbischofsheim district and in 1973 the Main-Tauber district.

On the table sheet no. 6323 “Tauberbischofsheim” from 1928, the village was still completely below Taubertalstrasse (L 506) except for three individual houses and the cemetery chapel.

On July 1, 1971, Impfingen became part of Tauberbischofsheim together with Hochhausen as part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg . From July 10th to 12th, 2009 the village celebrated its 700th anniversary. The parish church of St. Nicholas was renovated on the occasion of the town's anniversary.

In addition, in the same year Franz Kuhngamberger designated a 5-kilometer-long wayside shrine to the east of Impfingen, which leads around the village as a circular route. On the Impfing wayside shrine there are 17 wayside shrines from the 16th century to modern times as well as the Impfing way of the cross with 14 stations of the cross and a devotional cross.
