Kubb
Kubb is a game of skill played on a lawn. It has been played in its current form since around 1990 and is particularly popular in Sweden , Belgium , Germany , the USA and Switzerland . But also in many other European countries and also on the Asian and Australian continents no longer rare. In German-speaking countries it is sometimes marketed or played under the title "Viking Chess".
Game idea
Two teams compete against each other. A team consists of at least one to a maximum of six people. The players try to knock over the wooden blocks (Klotz = Kubb ) of the opposing party with throwing sticks. The king in the center of the field must be hit last. Whoever hits all kubbs on the opponent's half of the game and the king first, wins the game.
Game material
A Kubb game is traditionally built by yourself, but is also available for purchase. It consists of the following wooden figures:
- 1 king about 9 cm × 9 cm × 30 cm
- 10 kubbs approximately 7 cm × 7 cm × 15 cm
- 6 throwing sticks Ø approx.4.4 cm × 30 cm
- 4 corner bars about 2 cm × 2 cm × 30 cm
Hardwood should be used because of the high stress .
Occasionally, 6 pieces of border wood are included in the play set; two additional ones to mark the center line.
Game preparation
Before the game begins, two teams are formed, each consisting of 1 to 6 people.
The traditional playing field size is 5 by 8 meters. However, this size can be freely selected depending on the skills of the players. The area can be marked out with border timber. You can play Kubb on all kinds of surfaces such as grass, sand, snow or solid surfaces.
The game consists of six massive round sticks, ten knockdown blocks (kubbs) and a larger king.
Five kubbs, about one meter apart, form the baseline on each side. The king stands in the middle of the playing field.
The two teams position themselves opposite each other on either side behind their respective baseline, which is formed by the kubbs (baseline or base cubbs) set up.
A game consists of several game rounds. Which team starts the first round is drawn by lot. After that, the first throw right changes per game round. An alternative rule is that each team has a single attempt to get as close as possible to the king with a throwing stick. The team whose throwing stick comes closest to the king without knocking him over may begin.
Course of the game
The starting team A receives the six throwing sticks first. If possible, all team members receive the same number of throwing sticks. Now an attempt is made to fell the opposing kubbs by throwing the logs. It is basically thrown from below. The stick should fly with its longitudinal axis in the direction of the throw, horizontal throws and rotating throws are prohibited. The throwing sticks and any knocked over kubbs remain in place until all team members have thrown their sticks. After Team A has completed its throws, Team B collects all the throwing sticks and knocked over kubbs and it is now their turn.
The fallen kubbs are now thrown by team B into the field half of team A. The members of Team A put the kubbs where they left off. However, it is up to the team members in which direction the Kubb is tilted to put it down. (If the kubb is on the center line or one of the outer lines, it must always be set up in such a way that at least half of its base protrudes over the center of the line.) Team B has a maximum of two attempts per kubb to hit the opposing half of the field. If the Kubb lands outside the opposing half of the field on the second attempt, Team A may throw the Kubb itself from the opposing baseline into its own half of the field. The kubb must keep a distance of at least one length of throwing stick from the king or the corner points. The kubbs thrown in are called field kubbs.
Usually team B will try to throw the field cubes as close as possible behind the center line. This has the advantage that they are easier to hit due to the shorter distance. Likewise, an attempt is usually made to position the field cubbs as close to each other as possible so that there is a chance of falling two or more kubbs at once with the following throwing wood throws.
After all field cubes have been placed, team B throws the six throwing sticks at the kubbs in the field half of team A. First, all field cubbs must be knocked over. If one of the basic cubes falls over before all field cubes have been felled, it must be set up again. As soon as team B has felled all field cubes, it can throw at team A's basic cubes again.
Then it is Team A's turn again. Team A also initially throws all kubbs that have been knocked over by Team B into the opposing half of the field. If team B did not succeed in chopping all field cubes, team A may now proceed with the throwing sticks up to the field cub in its half that is closest to the king. So this Kubb forms the new throwing line for this round of Team A.
Playing
As soon as a team has knocked over all opposing field and base cubes, it may throw from the baseline at the king. If it knocks the king down, that team wins the game.
If a team overturns the king before it has overturned all opposing field and base cubes, it has lost the game.
Game variants
As with almost every game, Kubb also has a number of variations on the rules outlined above. The simplest variant is to reduce the size of the playing field or to reduce the number of basic cubes in order to shorten the game a little.
One variant relates to the placement of the field cubes. The throwing party can try to hit field cubes that have already been thrown in. If this succeeds, the kubbs may be stacked to form a tower (on top of each other) or placed next to each other in a row.
According to another variant, the basic cubes that have been felled are taken directly from the game, so they are not thrown back into the opposing field. Alternatively, fallen field cubes are removed from the game; so only felled base cubes are thrown into the opposing field. This shortens the playing time considerably and allows Kubb newbies to get a feel for throwing.
It is also possible, when playing with adults and small children (around three to five years old), to allow the children to always throw from the center line.
To make the end of the game even more exciting, there is a variant of the requirement to hit the king with his back to the playing field and a wood thrown through the legs. Another possibility is that the king must be discarded by right-handers with left and left-handers with right to win.
There is also the option to define a "black widow" and a "joker" at the start of the game. If the "black widow" is hit, the throwing round is over for the thrower. If the Joker is hit, the throwing round starts again.
In Finland a similar game called Mölkky with throwing sticks is widespread, but it is not played in a team, but in the "everyone against everyone" mode. Another variant is known in Russia under the name Gorodki .
"VM i Kubb" - The Kubb World Championships
Since 1995 the “official” Kubb World Championships have been held annually in Rone on the Swedish island of Gotland . The Kubb Championship is open to all Kubb teams who register, there are no age restrictions.
In 2002, 183 teams, each with six members, came together to win the title. The age of the participants was between eight and 85 years. In 2005 the “VM i Kubb” took place on two days of competition, August 5th and 6th. The entire qualifying round and all final rounds took place on the first day, only the final game started on the second day. This second day was otherwise filled with the small championship and a group game from a total of 64 teams that had qualified this and last year. The participants of the “Ekeby” team left the field as winners and world champions.
In 2008 there were again 160 teams at the start and the field of participants more international than ever before: Teams not only from Sweden, but also from countries such as Great Britain, Austria, Germany, France and Australia took part. The team "Ekeby" has been the most successful team in recent years, in 2008 they beat the German team "Progress99" in the final, and in 2009 the team "Gloria Victis". In 2010 the team "Gloria Victis" won, team "Ekeby" was eliminated in the preliminary round.
In 2013 the world championship title went to Germany for the first time to the German selection team "Kubb'Ings".
As the third team in Kubb history, the German selection team was able to defend its title from last year. In 2015, the summiteers played with their own team and even brought the title to Germany for the third time in a row with Austrian and Swedish friends. In 2015, the Kubb'Ings won the Purple World Cup on Saturday against Gloria Victis.
In 2016, the two Rostock individual teams formed "Kubb'Ings and Progress99" and were able to bring the world championship title back to Germany. The winners of the Purple World Cup on Saturday were Mulde Fritidsby from Sweden.

Kubb EM - The European Championships in Berlin
Since 2011, the official Kubb European Championships of the European Kubb Federation have been held in Berlin every year at the end of July. The Kubb EM is an open championship for all European teams of three or more people. Since 2018, the European champion in the team of six has also been determined on the day before the main tournament.
history
At the first European Championship in 2011, 53 teams from nine countries fought for the best possible placement in ten hours. In the final, The CH-ubbers (CH) and progress99 (GER) faced each other, from which progress99 emerged as the first European champion.
In 2012, 63 teams fought for the title. The Kubb'Ings and Progress99 faced each other, whereby the Kubb'Ings prevailed 3: 1 and were able to take home the challenge cup for a year. The final was held in a best-of-five mode for the first time .
The year 2013 brought 66 teams to the EM. There the title holder 2012 Kubb'Ings (GER) and Nobody Puts Gute in the Corner (SWE) (a mixed team from Team Ekeby and Menage a Trois) faced each other. The Kubb'Ings prevailed after a 2-0 lead just 3-2 and thus became the first double European champions.
In 2014, a new participant record was again achieved with 78 teams. After the hottest day of the year, Breitizone from Switzerland and the reigning European champion Kubb'Ings from Germany faced each other in the final, with the Kubb'Ings 3-0 in the best-of-five final in their " Living room ”prevailed.
The 2015 European Championship was marked by another record number of participating teams (90). In the final, the “summiteers” as the winners of the winning round and the 3-time defending champions Kubb'Ings from Rostock faced each other. Due to the weather conditions (strong wind and rain), the final was only played in a best-of-three mode, as in 2011, with the defending champions again winning 2-1.
In 2016, the EM was held on July 23, 2016 at the known venue. This time 67 teams took part in the tournament. In the final, the four-time winner and winner of the winning round, Kubb'Ings from Rostock, and the surprisingly strong Baus It Up team from Switzerland faced each other. The shortened final (best-of-three) again ended with a 2-1 victory for the Kubb'Ings.
Starting in 2018, the EM in Berlin was held for the first time over two disciplines. On July 20th, “Kubb Monsieur” from Belgium became the first European champion in a team of 6. On Saturday, July 21st, the traditional European Championship took place in a team of three. Here the “Kubb'Ings” team from Germany continued its success story and took the title for the seventh time in a row.
In 2019, the seemingly unbeatable Kubb'Ings won the European Championship for the eighth time in a row after a legendary rejected king's throw by the opponent in the fifth and decisive set.
The next EM will take place in Berlin on July 23 and 24, 2021.

Championships (Europe)
Germany
From 2002 to 2005 the tournament was held as the "open Berlin championship". From 2006 this tournament was converted into the "German Kubb Masters", which until 2010 was the unofficial German championship in Kubb. The tournament was organized by Kubbsport Berlin e. V. directed. In 2011 there was no German championship. Thus, the title holder was able to adorn himself with the title in 2010 as well. In 2012 the “German Kubb Masters” was renamed “German Championship”. After maintaining and rescuing the German championship, the new platform Kubb-Germany took on the German championship and has been organizing it in Leipzig since 2013.

This was played in the years 2009-2011 in combination with the tournament in Leipzig ("Leipzig kubbt") on a weekend, the overall winner could call himself "Saxon Kubbmeister" in the end. The results from Leipzig have not been passed down, the first Saxon Kubb Masters were the Kubb'Ings in 2009, who finished second in Leipzig and won a day later in Dresden. They repeated the feat over the next two years, before this overall winner was renamed "Central German Master" and had to live in Central Germany.
In 2016 the “Kubbios” team held the traditional tournament for the last time, and since then the “Kubbfreunde Durstiges Holz” have been taking on the tournament and continuing it.
