Wikiquote [ ˌvɪkiˈkwoʊt ] is a free online project with the aim of creating a free collection of quotations on a Wiki basis with quotations in every language. Like Wikipedia, Wikiquote is based on the MediaWiki software . Links to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects such as the Wikimedia Commons , Wikisource or the Wiktionary provide additional information .

The German version of Wikiquote was launched on July 18, 2004. The articles about quotations offer (if known) a source and are translated into German if necessary .

History of Wikiquote

Growth of the eight largest wikiquotes by July 2007.
Growth of further wikiquotes until January 2007.

On June 27, 2003, the Wikiquote project was temporarily operated in English using the Wolof version of Wikipedia. Wikiquote received its own subdomain (quote.wikipedia.org) on July 10, 2003, and its own domain (wikiquote.org) on August 25, 2003.

A year later, on July 17, 2004, other language versions were launched in addition to English. In November 2004, Wikiquote was available in a total of 24 languages. On November 13th the 2000th article was created in the English Wikiquote, at the end of March 2005 there were a total of 10,000 articles across all language versions. In 2016, Wikiquote was available in 89 languages, including Latin and Volapük .

On November 4, 2005, the English Wikiquote held quotations in 5000 articles. Between November and December 2005, the Polish, Italian and Portuguese Wikiquote reached 2000 articles and the Spanish one 1000 articles. The 5000th article was published in the German-language Wikiquote on March 9, 2006. Between August and September 2006, the Slovak Wikiquote reached 3500 articles, the Portuguese 3000 and the Slovenian 2000. In March 2007, Wikiquote had over 3000 articles in eight languages and others five languages for over 1000 articles, and in a further 23 languages for over 100 articles. The project has won over 35,000 registered users and has increased its stock of articles fivefold to over 50,000 in two years. The English Wikiquote is the most extensive with over 9000 articles, followed by the German with over 7000 and the Polish with over 4000 articles.

The German-language Wikiquote

The first article of the German-language Wikiquote was created on July 18, 2004 and had Bertrand Russell on the subject, one day later the hundredth article was reached with Anatole France . On November 14, 2004 the 1000th article was created with Henning Mankell , the 3000th article on July 31, 2005 with Otto Ludwig and the 5000th article on March 9, 2006 with Jürgen Grässlin . On October 28, 2006, Wikiquote reached the 7000th article with Alfons Frenk .

Reception and Discourses

Above all, the site about graffiti was criticized, as it shows any selection without verifiability.

Until 2006, it was repeatedly criticized that the German Wikiquote contained non-free quotes from authors who have not yet died 70 years ago, without these copyright- protected quotes being in a context that would justify their reproduction as evidence (see collection of quotations ). Since a reform phase in summer 2006, these problems have largely been resolved.

Due to copyright problems, the French-language Wikiquote was temporarily closed by the Wikimedia Foundation with effect from March 29, 2006; it was reopened on December 4, 2006.

Quotations from the different language versions of Wikiquote are often included in other works - for example, the book search engine books.google.com delivered over 270 works in early 2009 in which Wikiquote is mentioned or quotations from Wikiquote are used.
