Erica Jong
Erica Jong , born Mann (born March 26, 1942 in New York City ) is an American writer .
Life
Erica Jong is a best-selling author . After studying English literature at the University of Maryland , she initially taught at various colleges, in addition to the USA, also in Austria and Israel.
She became famous for her first book, the autobiographically influenced novel Fear of Flying from 1973, which sold 18 million times worldwide and appeared in 27 languages. In 1977, a film adaptation by Franz Josef Gottlieb was made in Germany under the title Joy of Flying with Gianni Garko , Olivia Pascal and Michel Jacot . This book is considered a classic of female erotic literature , which gave Jong the title "Queen of Eroticism". In this context, Jong made friends with Henry Miller and dedicated the study The Devil in Person to him. Henry Miller and I (1993), in which she deals with the cultural politics of American Puritanism and contemporary feminism .
After this success she published eight more novels, several of which made it onto bestseller lists. These books, however, can be assigned to a different style and deal with different topics, as they predominantly deal with the self-realization of women, their place in society and the difficult mother-daughter relationship. Her latest novel tells the story of a Jewish family in America. In 1971 she published her first volume of poetry, which was followed by various collections of poetry.
Jong is married for the fourth time. With her second husband, a psychoanalyst and specialist in child psychiatry of Chinese descent, she lived in Heidelberg from 1966 to 1969 . During this time she commuted to Frankfurt am Main , where she underwent psychotherapy with Alexander Mitscherlich , which "freed" her from the influence of her dominant mother and from her self-censorship. She processed her stay in Germany in Fear of Flying .
Erica Jong lives alternately in New York City and Weston , Connecticut. Her daughter Molly is also a writer.

- ↑ Still Flying. In: The New Yorker , April 14, 2008: "Erica Jong, the novelist, essayist, and poet, has long lamented that" Fear of Flying, "which has sold more than eighteen million copies worldwide since it was published, in 1973, has overshadowed the remainder of her sizable oeuvre. "
