Wilbert Ellis Moore
Wilbert Ellis Moore (born October 26, 1914 in Elma , Washington , † December 29, 1987 ) was an American sociologist and 56th President of the American Sociological Association .
Moore studied at Harvard University and was one of Talcott Parsons’s first PhD students, along with Kingsley Davis and Robert K. Merton . Moore became Professor of Sociology at Princeton University in 1951 and moved to the University of Denver in the 1960s , where he taught until his retirement. In 1958 he was elected to the American Philosophical Society and in 1966 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
As early as 1945, together with Kingsley Davis, he developed the Davis-Moore hypothesis , named after them, on the social structure , according to which certain positions are functionally more important than others in every society and require special skills for which only a limited number of individuals are gifted.
