Wild Man Fischer in Los Angeles (ca.1975)

Larry "Wild Man" Fischer (real name: Lawrence Wayne Fischer , born November 6, 1944 in Los Angeles , California ; † June 16, 2011 there ) was an American musician .

Career

Fischer was walking through Los Angeles as a street musician when he met Frank Zappa . Zappa produced a double LP with him in 1968, An Evening With Wild Man Fischer , a strange conglomerate of a cappella songs, improvisations with members of Zappa's band The Mothers of Invention and spoken passages.

The LP was a commercial flop, but brought Fischer a small cult community that also included musicians like Tom Waits and Linda Ronstadt . However, he fell out with Zappa and his family, and Gail Zappa , Frank Zappa's widow, refused to agree to a republication of An Evening .

Fischer disappeared from the scene for almost a decade, until he reappeared in the late 1970s with the album Wildmania , the first release on the Rhino Records label . Again, a small fan base gathered around Fischer, this time mainly from punk and new wave musicians. Two more LPs followed, then Fischer withdrew, also due to psychological problems: He suffered from a form of schizophrenia and was considered manic depressive .

Since then, Fischer has only been heard and seen sporadically, mostly on records by other musicians, such as the pop and jazz singer Rosemary Clooney . Instead, others dealt with Fischer: A comic series was published with the title The Legend Of Wild Man Fischer , which has also been available as a book since 2004. In 2005 the documentary Derailroaded premiered, which also deals with Fischer's biography.

Fischer died on June 16, 2011 due to heart problems.
