Wild Turkey (English; "Wild turkey" , a national symbol of the USA) is an American Kentucky Straight Bourbon produced by Austin Nichols in the Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg , Kentucky . The brand has existed since 1941 and has belonged to Davide Campari-Milano since 2009 .

history

In 1855, John Ripy opened a distillery in Kentucky. In 1869, the Ripy Distillery was founded on the hill now known as "Wild Turkey Hill" above a gorge of the Kentucky River Lawrenceburg , Kentucky . The distillery was temporarily closed in 1919 due to prohibition; In 1933 it was finally reopened and modernized. In 1940 Thomas McCarthy, one of the managers of the Ripy Distillery, brought his own whiskey with him to hunt wild turkeys . His friends liked the whiskey so much that the following year they asked him to bring some of the "Wild Turkey" whiskey back to the turkey hunt; then the slang name became the brand name.

In 1980 the Austin Nichols company (later Grand Metropolitan ; today Diageo ), now owner of the Ripy Distillery, was taken over by Pernod Ricard . The Wild Turkey whiskey received a gold medal at The International Wine and Spirit Competition in 1992 .
