George Wildon "Gabriel" Pieritz (born May 3, 1808 in Klecko , Posen, † July 24, 1884 in High Ham , Somerset, England) was a missionary and teacher.

Life

Joachim Pieritz's son was raised to be a rabbi and trained in Czarnikow ( Netzedistrikt ). In 1835 he was baptized in London, in the Church of Bethnal-Green. (His brother was probably Joseph Abraham Pieritz, born in Klecko in 1815, who was also baptized in London in 1838, proselytized in the west of England and went to British Guiana in 1851. ) In December 1837, he married Emily Watson Hitcham (1811-1838 in Great Yarmouth ) ). In the summer of 1838 he had been sent to Jerusalem as a missionary for the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews . In 1840 Hans Nicolajsen sent him to Damascus for four months, where Father Thomas had been murdered in February. The Jewish historian Heinrich Graetz later said that only Pieritz and the Austrian consul Merlato impartially reproduced the beginnings of Damascus history . Pieritz was in Bucharest in 1841. Back in England he retired on October 25, 1842, then studied in Cambridge until 1846 (BA 1847; MA 1855) and served as a curator in Stanningley ( Pudsey ) in 1846/47 . In 1846 he married Sarah Elizabeth Hillier (1816-1887) from Kent. 1847-1851 he evangelized (as successor to George L. Allen) in India, where Augustin Hillier Pieritz (1849-1864) and Ann Laetitia Pieritz (1850-1886) were born. Back in England he taught at Cambridge. In 1865 he was transferred to Hardwick (Cambridgeshire) , where he was rector until 1870. At the 1881 census, the family lived at 33 Iffley Rd, Oxford.
