Wilfried Hartmann (educational scientist)

Wilfried Hartmann (born May 16, 1941 in Hamburg-Altona ) is a German educationalist and President of the General Synod of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD). Since 1980 he has been professor of educational science at the University of Hamburg , where he was vice-president from 1996 to 2003.

Scientific career

After graduating from high school in Bad Oeynhausen , Hartmann studied German, theology, philosophy and education in Hamburg and Tübingen . In 1971 he became General in Hamburg in the subject Linguistics with a thesis on religious word collection in the German vernacular for Dr. phil. PhD. In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki, Finland.

Since 1980 the now emeritus professor for educational science has taught at the University of Hamburg. From 1996 to 2003, Hartmann was vice president of the university. He also acted there as director of the Institute for Didactics of Languages ​​and the Institute for Comparative Education. From 1983 to 1987 he was the spokesperson (dean) of the Department of Education and from 2002 to 2006 he was Director for Comparative German and European Studies at the ICGS (International Center for Graduate Studies) at the University of Hamburg. From 1996 to 2004 he was a member and deputy. Chairman of the “Governing board” and the “Standing Committee” of the “ UNESCO Institute for Education ”, today's “Unesco Institute for Lifelong Learning”. From his retirement until 2016, Hartmann represented the University of Hamburg in the European University Foundation in Luxembourg as director, held visiting professorships in Riga, Kaunas and Luxembourg and advised international educational institutions such as B. WISS (Western International School Shanghai) as a member of the Academic Advisory Board. Since 2018 he has been a member of the Steering Committee of the "Forum for World Education".

Activities in the EKD

Hartmann has been President (Chairman) of the Synod of the Hamburg-East Church District and the forerunner Church District of Old Hamburg since 1997 and member of the EKD Synod and since 1996 the General Synod of the VELKD. His deputies in the synod are Meike Plaß and Karen Koop . Hartmann has been President of the General Synod of the VELKD since 2009 . On May 1, 2015 he was re-elected for another six years by the 12th General Synod in Würzburg. He prevailed in the election against Professor Friedrich Vogelbusch in the second ballot with 27 to 18 votes. The current 12th term of office of the General Synod began on April 30, 2015 in Würzburg and ends in 2021.
