Wilhelm Altendorf (born March 15, 1874 in Minden ; † 1948 there ) was a German designer and mechanical engineer . He founded the Altendorf Maschinenbau company .

Life

Altendorf was born on March 15, 1874 in Minden . After successfully passing master craftsman exams in the carpentry trade and in the area of furniture design, Wilhelm Altendorf worked as a draftsman in the furniture area of a shopfitting company in Berlin . After two years of professional experience, together with his brother-in-law Ernst Müller, he founded his own factory for business furnishings near Hackescher Markt in Grosse Hamburger Strasse 20 in January 1906. Here, Wilhelm Altendorf invented the sliding table saw in 1906.

When his partner left the company after a year, Wilhelm Altendorf only had limited financial possibilities for the necessary machine investments. In addition, the machines that were offered on the market for woodworking at that time did not meet his requirements. Wilhelm Altendorf therefore began to develop and build machines himself for his own needs. This included the first sizing and trimming circular saw based on the "Altendorf system".
