Wilhelm August Golicke ( Russian Вильгельм-Август Голике , also Василий Александрович Голике ; * 1802 in Reval or Saint Petersburg ; † July 5, 1848 in Saint Petersburg) was a Baltic German painter.

Life and painting

Wilhelm August Golicke (also Golike ) came from the middle class of the capital Reval (today Tallinn ) of the Estonia Governorate . He studied painting in the Petersburg studio of the English artist George Dawe (1781–1829).

Between 1822 and 1828 Dawe and his two students Golicke and Alexander Poljakow (1801-1835) made a total of 329 portraits of Tsarist generals who had made a name for themselves in the war against Napoleon . The pictures can be seen in the Military Gallery (Военная галерея) of the Hermitage Winter Palace . During the work, Golicke became one of Dawes' closest collaborators, who bequeathed him an annuity in his will .

After Dawes death in 1829 Golicke studied at the Imperial Art Academy of the Russian capital until 1832 . In 1832 he received the title of independent artist. In 1837 he visited England and Italy. In 1848 Golicke died of cholera in Saint Petersburg .

His independent work since 1826 includes not only portrait art, but also genre paintings , still lifes and history painting . Numerous works by Golicke now belong to the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow .
