Wilhelm Gliese (born June 21, 1915 in Goldberg i. Silesia , † June 12, 1993 in Eberbach ) was a German astronomer .

Life

Gliese studied astronomy , mathematics and physics at the University of Breslau from 1933 , then in Berlin , where he also worked at the Astronomical Computing Institute . After returning from Soviet captivity in 1949, he worked at the Astronomical Computing Institute in Heidelberg . Until 1954 he worked on the Astronomical Yearbook, from 1957 until his retirement he was involved in Fundamentalkatalog 4 and FK5 .

It is for the Catalog of Nearby Stars (catalog of nearby stars) known who appeared 1969th In 1951 Peter van de Kamp had suggested to him to compile a catalog of stars near the Sun and thereby expand the limit from five parsecs (with around 40 objects) to four times (with over 1,000 stars). A first version of this catalog with objects up to 20 parsecs appeared in 1957. The 1969 edition (with over 2,000 objects) reached up to 22 parsecs. These Gliese catalogs formed the basis for significant further investigations into the distribution, composition and kinematics of low-mass stars in the vicinity of the sun.

The asteroid (1823) Gliese is dedicated to him.
