Wilhelm Hartmann (born December 23, 1853 in Hildesheim , † December 22, 1922 in Berlin ) was a German mechanical engineer and university professor .

Life

After completing his technical studies, he first worked as a government builder. Franz Reuleaux became aware of him through his invention of the locomotive tender coupling and drew him to his laboratory at the Technical University of Charlottenburg . In 1886 he completed his habilitation there as a private lecturer . Together with Reuleaux, he was a judge at several world exhibitions . After he had been awarded the title of professor in 1892, he was given the lectureship for kinematic geometry and kinematics after Reuleaux left in 1897 . In 1918 he was appointed extraordinary honorary professor. As Reuleaux's successor, he was also responsible for looking after his important cinematic collection, most of which was lost due to war damage. Hartmann is also considered to be the inventor of a spirit engine.

He found his final resting place in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
