Wilhelm Hayen

Heinrich Wilhelm Ludwig Hayen (born August 10, 1834 in Oldenburg ; † June 26, 1918 there ) was a German lawyer and secret senior church councilor .

Life and work

Wilhelm Hayen, son of an appellate judge and later president of the consistory, studied law in Heidelberg, Tübingen, Berlin and Göttingen after graduating from high school in Oldenburg . During his time at the universities in southern Germany, he used the semester break to travel far to Switzerland, France, Spain and Italy; in Göttingen he became a member of the Hannovera fraternity . He passed the state examination in Oldenburg. He then joined the judicial service of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and was initially an assistant judge at the Varel Supreme Court . Later he was a member of the Varel Public Prosecutor's Office; In 1874 he was appointed magistrate in Wildeshausen and received the title of judicial councilor.

Two years later he switched to church service and became a secular member of the upper church council and the high school college of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg . He played a key role in the amendment of canon law in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in 1888. In 1890 he was promoted to the Secret Council of Churches and in 1904 to the Secret Upper Council of Churches. This activity resulted in fundamental publications on canon law of the Oldenburg regional church .

In addition, Wilhelm Hayen was chairman of the board of the deaconess mother house "Elisabethstift" in Oldenburg for a long time. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Association for Archeology and Regional History in Oldenburg and wrote articles on historical and social issues relating to local events. He achieved a treatise of general interest by evaluating the diaries of his father Heinrich Wilhelm Hayen (1791-1854), Vice President of the Oldenburg Higher Appeal Court, who studied law during the time when Oldenburg and all of north-west Germany belonged to France.

Wilhelm Hayen was awarded the Knight's Cross of Honor 1st Class of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg for his services .
