Wilhelm Hinrichs (born September 1, 1940 in Zirtow , Neustrelitz; † May 30, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German social scientist .

Life

Hinrichs studied film production, economics and sociology at the Konrad Wolf Academy for Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg and the Humboldt University in Berlin . After completing his doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin, from 1973 he worked as a senior employee in central economic institutions in East Berlin (Economic Council of the Greater Berlin District , Ministry for District Industry and Food Industry , Municipal Housing Administration ). From 1982 he worked as a social researcher at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . There, together with Horst Berger (leader), Thomas Hanf, Wilhelm Hinrichs, Eckhard Priller and Doris Rentzsch, in 1983/1984 the group developed the sociological analysis instrument "System of social indicators of the socialist way of life" which was recognized throughout Germany and internationally.

Hinrichs continued his research from 1992, after the unification of the two German states, at the Berlin Science Center for Social Research (WZB) under the direction of the prominent German sociologist Wolfgang Zapf . His fields of work were housing and urban sociological issues, migration-theoretical and migration-political issues and the investigation of processes of social integration. His retrospective analyzes of housing supply in the GDR are regarded by the student council as standard research on housing sociology on the GDR. He was an avowed advocate of a close connection between theory and practice and designed, among other things, modified or new models for the empirical investigation of spatial mobility (such as the choice of residential location and residential suburbanization) and immigrant integration. The results on the social integration of immigrants were used, among other things, as a theoretical basis for the development of the integration manual of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2004. His publications, especially those in the journal Deutschland Archiv , published by the Federal Agency for Civic Education , are part of teaching at grammar schools, colleges and universities. Hinrichs was a member of the German Society for Sociology from 1992 .

Hinrichs died at the age of 79.
