Wilhelm Jaeger (born January 5, 1941 in Zurich ) is a Swiss artist.

Life

Wilhelm Jaeger grew up as an only child in Zurich. The first oil paintings were created around 1953 under the guidance of his grandfather. Wilhelm Jaeger attended the preliminary course at the arts and crafts school in Zurich with the sculptor Ernst Gubler , then as a trainee classes with Ernst Gubler and Heinrich Müller . Wilhelm Jaeger trained as a textile draftsman from 1959 to 1962 at the textile school in Zurich. He was taught by Johannes Itten in color and form theory and in ink painting according to the Japanese tradition. Study trips to Greece and Ravenna followed. In Como he attended courses in which he made copies of old paintings. He drew and painted according to nature, architecture, ornamentation and from his own imagination. He earned his living with textile designs and was supported by his future wife, Doris Kürner. Jaeger and Kürner went on study trips to Italy, Greece and Tunisia. Wilhelm Jaeger was married to Doris Kürner from 1965 to 1975.

In 1972, Wilhelm Jaeger returned to Zurich, where he was a teacher at the School of Applied Arts until 1989. He taught color and shape theory according to Johannes Itten's theory. A first solo exhibition in 1981 in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich made Wilhelm Jaeger known in Germany. From now on a regular exhibition activity followed. In 1983 Wilhelm Jaeger exhibited in London together with Max Bill , Camille Graeser and Gottfried Honegger . In the second half of the 1980s, Jaeger painted subjects such as stable doors, gates, portals, columns and statuesque depictions of people. Towards the end of the 1980s, his pictures were dominated by aggressive basic colors, black, a lot of anthracite and white.

Jaeger moved to Osogna in Ticino in 1996. He dealt with religious issues. In cycle XXIV he expanded his own sign language with symbols from Christian iconography : chalices, eagles, angels, cross, Adam and Eve. His color palette changed: earth tones, ivory, sienna, ocher, olive green and steel blue blend to create a Mediterranean sound. In 2000, Wilhelm Jaeger opened his own museum in Palazzo Lenti in Noci / Apulia. Wilhelm Jaeger lived in Lanzarote, Spain for two years. In the years 2003-2005 pictures after Otto Meyer-Amden were created in the canton of Glarus.

From 2006, Wilhelm Jaeger lived and worked in the studio of Max Gubler, the brother of his former teacher Ernst Gubler, in Unterengstringen. Wilhelm Jaeger has lived in Murg am Walensee since spring 2014.

Wilhelm Jaeger's work is divided into four large groups of work: youth work and years of study, places and localizations, ancient and Christian mythology, cube-pole figure with the sub-groups border areas and constructive elements. Visionary, heavily painted, spatially expressive imagery is characteristic of Wilhelm Jaeger. His works are represented in many museums and in private collections.
