Wilhelm Jordan (Mayor)

Wilhelm Jordan († 1462 ) was a German merchant and mayor of Danzig 1454–1461.

Life

His father Peter Jordan was a wealthy long-distance merchant and shipowner from Gdansk with rich ship ownership. His mother Margarete von der Beke was a great niece of Mayor Gert von der Beke, his brother Jacob later became canon in Samland .

Wilhelm Jordan became a coat of arms of Emperor Friedrich III in 1430 . awarded. In 1431 he became a lay judge and in 1433 a councilor in Danzig. In 1453 Jordan was one of the ambassadors of the Prussian League to the Polish king and emperor. In 1454 he commanded the Danzig troops in the battle of Marienburg against the Teutonic Order . In February he received the keys for their lock from the last Commander in Danzig. In March he negotiated with King Casimir of Poland extensive autonomy for Danzig within the new affiliation to Poland.

In 1456, Wilhelm Jordan was deposed as mayor during the civil uprising under Martin Kogge. Then he came back to the office. In 1460 he was captured by the Teutonic Order with two councilmen and only released for a large ransom. That year he negotiated again with the Polish king.

In 1463 an estate administrator was mentioned for his children. Wilhelm von Jordan must have died at this time.
