Wilhelm Kopp (pastor)

Wilhelm Kopp (* 1856 ; † June 24, 1910 in Perouse ) was a German Protestant pastor who a. a. campaigned for the spread of the Gospel in Italy .

Life

After his training, Wilhelm Kopp took up a position as a Protestant pastor. In 1883 he took a leave of absence for three years to work as an assistant to the missionary Hermann Gundert in Calw . Wilhelm Kopp then worked from 1886 to 1896 as a pastor in the village of Perouse, which was founded in 1699 by Waldensians who were expelled from Italy . As such, from 1893 to 1895, for example, he achieved the urgently needed water pipeline construction from the Heimsheimer springs into the local area of ​​Perouse.

Numerous trips to Italy introduced him to the country and its people. He collected interesting facts about the Italian language, culture, churches and denominations, evaluated newspapers and magazines from Italy and translated relevant articles into German. A large part of it he published in the news about the spread of the gospel in Italy , which was published by an association founded in Stuttgart in 1872 that actively supported Waldensian evangelism in Italy. In 1890 Kopp became editor of this news paper, which was distributed throughout the German Empire. In this way he reached a broad readership and informed them above all about the Waldensian evangelistic work. He was editor of this magazine until his death.

For some time Wilhelm Kopp was also secretary of the Calwer publishing association. He also wrote several biographies for the Calw family library , including in particular about Christian Gottlob Barth .

Kopp's grave is on the Perouse cemetery wall.

Honors

In Perouse, a district of Rutesheim since 1972 , a street was named after Wilhelm Kopp and his grave site is maintained to this day.
