Wilhelm Luther (classical philologist)

Wilhelm Luther (born January 11, 1910 in Erdmannrode , Hesse ; † October 3, 1976 in Malia , Crete ) was a German classical philologist and didactic specialist .

Life

Wilhelm Luther studied classical philology and philosophy at the University of Göttingen , where he was particularly influenced by the New Testament scholar Walter Bauer and the philologist Hermann Fränkel . In 1933 Luther completed his studies with a doctorate . Military service and imprisonment interrupted his career from 1939 to 1947.

From 1953 to 1975 Luther was director of the Philippinum Marburg grammar school . At the same time he was chairman of the scientific examination office and lecturer for didactics of ancient languages, pedagogy and philosophy at the Philipps University of Marburg , which appointed him honorary professor in 1962. Wilhelm Luther died on October 3, 1976 while traveling in Malia on Crete.

Wilhelm Luther dealt with ancient philosophy and the didactics of ancient languages. Since the 1950s, in addition to his teaching activities, he has been involved in the reform of ancient language teaching through numerous essays and lectures.
