Wilhelm Mardus
Wilhelm Arthur Mardus (born February 11, 1893 in Breslau ; † November 4, 1960 in Berlin ) was a member of the SPD and from January to October 1947 briefly district mayor of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain .
Wilhelm Mardus was born in 1893 as the son of the roofer Wilhelm Mardus and his wife Berta, née Malz. He was initially a blacksmith and served as a musketeer during the First World War . After the forced unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED in East Germany in 1946, Mardus continued to work in the local SPD associations that still existed . In the election for the city council of Greater Berlin in October 1946 he was elected, but left in February 1947. In January 1947, Mardus became district mayor of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain after the district mayor, Erich Lange (1908–1954), also of the SPD, had not been confirmed by the Soviet military administration in Germany (SMAD), who was elected by the Friedrichshain district council .
On October 25, 1947, he was released from his position by the SMAD under the Soviet commander of Berlin , Major General Alexander Georgievich Kotikow . He was accused of sabotaging the “wood action ” for fuel supply in the post-war winters.
Wilhelm Mardus married Emma Hanke, a saleswoman, on October 27, 1917 in Berlin. A son was born in 1919, who emigrated to Canada with his family in 1956.
