Wilhelm Maurer (Librarian)

Wilhelm Maurer (born June 24, 1826 in Darmstadt ; † December 13, 1894 there ) was a German librarian .

Life

Wilhelm Maurer was born in 1826 as the son of a businessman. He was related to the Darmstadt librarian Andreas Schleiermacher , whose wife was a born bricklayer. Wilhelm Maurer attended grammar school in his hometown and after graduating, studied classical philology at the University of Giessen . During his studies he became a member of the Cattia Gießen fraternity in the winter semester of 1845/46 . In 1847 he passed the philological state examination with distinction and became an Accesist at the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt. From 1849 he was a teacher in England and returned to Darmstadt in 1855. After the death of Karl August Ludwig Feder in January 1856, he got a job at the Grand Ducal Court Library. He started out as a laborer, became accesist in 1857, secretary in 1859 and first secretary in 1865. In 1873 he was promoted to court librarian. When Philipp Alexander Ferdinand Walther retired in autumn 1885 , he was appointed his successor as director of the court library on October 17, 1885 . He held this office until his death.

The merits of the wall lie primarily in improving the accessibility of the court library for users. He issued new usage regulations and improved the situation in the reading rooms. Wilhelm Maurer died after a short illness in December 1894 at the age of 68 in his hometown. He was born with Charlotte Maurer. Eckhardt married. The sons Berthold and Karl emerged from the marriage.
