life and work

Friedrich Wilhelm Oesterhaus was born on March 9, 1840 as the youngest of four children in Detmold. His father was probably a civil servant and came from Haustenbeck in the Senne . His mother died when he was five years old. He attended the community school and from 1855 the teachers' college in Detmold. In 1857 he passed the public school examination and began his first job on November 1, 1857 as an assistant teacher in the countryside in Donop . From 1858 to 1864 Oesterhaus taught in Lüdenhausen , until 1865 in Almena and again in Lüdenhausen until 1868. At that time he was offered a position in the preschool of the Leopoldinum Gymnasium in Detmold, which he took up on October 1, 1868.

During his time in Lüdenhaus, Oesterhaus discovered his interest in the Low German dialect, the Lippe Low German . He hadn't learned this language as a child because only High German was spoken in his parents' house. Now he tried to speak Low German with the villagers and learn their language, otherwise the school children would not have understood him. His move to the high school in Detmold was successful, so that he was employed as a regular high school teacher from July 1, 1871. Here he celebrated his 50th anniversary with the company in 1907 and did not retire until April 1, 1916 at the age of 76.

In 1882 Oesterhaus published his first work Iuse Platt (Our Platt) at the Klingenberg'schen Hofbuchhandlung von Hans Hinrichs in Detmold and appeared as a Lippish dialect poet. Further works were the plays Berta Odemissen , Hermann der Cheruskerfürst (1894) and Siegfried, as well as the novel Odemissen (1894) and the volumes of poetry Aule Euken (Old Oaks) (1913). In 1914 a second expanded edition of I'use Platt appeared .

Wilhelm Oesterhaus died on February 27, 1927 in Detmold at the age of almost 87 years. His daughter Bertha was also active as a writer and wrote several children's books. In Lippe, streets were named after him in five localities, including Oesterhausstraße in Detmold.
