Wilhelm Schwinning

Wilhelm Schwinning (born August 20, 1874 in Potsdam ; † 1955 ) was a German metallurgist and university professor at the TH Dresden from 1919 to 1934.

Life

He studied at the TH Berlin . During his studies in 1893 he became a member of the Erato Dresden singers . His doctorate in physics took place in 1898 at the University of Rostock . Then he worked for Richard Stribeck at the central office for scientific and technical investigations in the physical and metallurgical department in Neubabelsberg near Berlin. In 1909 he became professor of weapon design and mechanical technology at the Military Technical Academy and a member of the artillery examination commission . After their dissolution as a result of the Versailles Treaty in 1919, Schwinning was appointed to a full chair for metallurgy and metallography at the TH Dresden. In 1933 he was suspended by the Nazi regime and finally dismissed in 1934 for unknown reasons, although in November 1933 he signed the confession of the German professors to Adolf Hitler . He went to Nanking in the Republic of China , where he opened a materials testing institute for military purposes together with Carl Cranz as part of the German weapons aid for Chiang Kai-shek .

Private

Schwinning was married and had two sons named Helmut (* 1911) and Karl-Heinz. He is a descendant of the mercenary Peter Hagendorf .
