Wilhelm Staedel (born March 18, 1843 in Darmstadt ; † May 14, 1919 there ) was a German organic chemist .

Life

Wilhelm Staedel was the son of Eduard Staedel, a Darmstadt judiciary, and his wife Wilhelmine Tenner. Staedel completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist in Pfeddersheim near Worms and from 1861 studied chemistry in Heidelberg and Tübingen, where he received his doctorate in 1864. There he was a student of Adolph Strecker . Alfred Einhorn then studied with him in Tübingen in 1880. He also learned in the laboratory of Carl Remigius Fresenius in Wiesbaden. From 1864 to 1866 he was an assistant at the higher commercial school in Darmstadt, a predecessor of the TH Darmstadt . He then worked as an assistant at the University of Tübingen, where he completed his habilitation in 1869. That year he became a private lecturer at the University of Tübingen. In 1873 he received the title of professor. At the request of Lothar Meyer , he became associate professor in Tübingen in August 1876.

The pyrazine synthesis via the conversion of α-haloketones with ammonia (1876) is named after him and Leopold Rügheimer . However, he mainly dealt with physical organic chemistry and theoretical organic chemistry.

In April 1881 Wilhelm Staedel became a full professor of chemistry at the TH Darmstadt. The office of dean of the chemical-technical school was connected with this professorship. From autumn 1882 to autumn 1884 he was rector of the TH Darmstadt. During this time it was possible to prevent the intended closure of the TH Darmstadt. This succeeded u. a. with the appointment of Erasmus Kittler on November 1, 1882 to the first professorship for electrical engineering worldwide. This brought many new students from Germany and abroad to the TH. In 1885 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

From 1887 to 1895 Staedel was also dean of the chemical-technical school. From 1895 to 1898 and from 1907 to 1910 he was dean of the chemistry department.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the professorship, the chemist Heinrich Caro gave a speech in honor of Staedel on March 26, 1906 in the auditorium of the TH Darmstadt. Staedel retired at the end of the winter semester 1910/11.

Wilhelm Staedel died in May 1919 at the age of 76. He had been married to Anna Clara Medicus from Darmstadt since 1876.
