Wilhelm Stumpf (City Councilor)
Wilhelm Stumpf (* 1875 in Bochum ; † January 15, 1949 ibid) was a German civil servant in the local government, city council and cultural department.
Life
Wilhelm Stumpf was born the son of a Bochum bookseller. After attending the state high school in Bochum, he studied law at the universities of Tübingen, Leipzig and Göttingen. In 1895 he became a member of the Corps Rhenania in Tübingen . After completing his studies, he joined the Bochum city administration as a legal assistant in 1903. In 1904 he was elected a paid city councilor. As such, he chaired the board of directors and the committees for secondary schools and vocational schools. He was responsible for the administration of the affairs of the Märkische administration school, the administration academy, the business school, the city theater, the city orchestra, the picture gallery, the local history museum, the city library, the administrative libraries and the tram.
Wilhelm Stumpf is considered to be the creator of the cultural institutions of the city of Bochum. In particular, the opening of the first Bochum city theater at the end of 1915 was his initiative. From 1919 the theater had its own ensemble. On the occasion of his 60th birthday, Gerhart Hauptmann praised him as a "highly respected initiator of the famous Bochum theater and music scene" .
Awards
Wilhelm Stumpf was an honorary member of the German Shakespeare Society in Weimar and the Institute for Theater Studies at the University of Cologne. In 1953 the city of Bochum named Wilhelm-Stumpf-Strasse after him .
