Wilhelm Wenzel (* 1841 in Unna ; † November 19, 1914 in Hörde , today Dortmund ) was Hörder original and city poet .

Life

Wenzel, who came to Hörde at a young age, was a master bookbinder . He ran his trade in one of the buildings of the former Clarisse monastery "Clarenberg" and also sold school books, paper and stationery there. His little shop could hardly feed him, so he was dependent on the charity of his friends all his life. Its unusual appearance - it was only about five feet - and its peculiar character made it well known. However, his short poems, which he wrote almost every day on boards next to the entrance to his shop and in which he also presented his criticism of fellow citizens and society, received particular attention. Wenzel, who was never married, was considered a loner. He found his few contacts in the journeyman's association , whose members also paid their last respects in 1914. In 1958 a street near the Hörder Markt was named after Wenzel, and in 2001 a memorial was erected on this street by the Hörde Association for the Promotion of Homeland Care.

plant

Wenceslas' work has only survived in fragments, it essentially consists of short verses, written in both High and Low German .

Heads up!
Don't let annoyance tease you!
Be amazed and take courage!
Many a head wears a hat
to cover their donkey ears.
So he is afraid to take it off,
because otherwise these would come to light.

Wenzel about himself:
I
use to write my theses according to my own head
And if you don't want to read them,
let it stay
