Wilhelm Wiegmann

Wilhelm Wiegmann (born November 17, 1851 in Berlin ; † October 2, 1920 there ) was a German history painter and mosaicist .

Live and act

After attending the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1870 to 1873 , he supported Arthur Fitger in painting the Bremen Stock Exchange from 1880 to 1883 and in 1885 Friedrich Geselschap in the fame hall of the armory in Berlin. He also got to know casein painting . In 1886 he founded a decorative painting studio with the businessman August Wagner, which was the first independent German production workshop for mosaicism to compete with the predominant Italian-Venetian practice. With the involvement of the engineer Friedrich Puhl, whose sister Henriette he had married in 1886, the "German Glass Mosaic Institute" Puhl & Wagner in Rixdorf was created in 1889 . After a study trip to Italy and Sicily, which he had undertaken together with the building officer Franz Schwechten , he opened the Wilhelm Wiegmann mosaic atelier (from 1897 German Glass Mosaic Society Wilhelm Wiegmann) at Tiergarten station as a separate company . From 1883 he was a member of the Association of Berlin Artists and the General German Art Cooperative .

His works include mosaics for the Gnaden-, Emmaus-, Emanuel-, Georgenkirche, Kaiser Wilhelm and Kaiser-Friedrich-Gedächtniskirche as well as in the Hotel Bristol in Berlin. On easel pictures of him are downfall , to name the rule of lightning and card players in the pub environment. He also made decorations for the Römerbad, Alexanderbad, Admiralsgartenbad and aquarium sign, as well as various house facade decorations (vedute pictures).

His final resting place is in the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf .
