Wilhelm von Coudenberghe

Wilhelm von Coudenberghe († before 1406 ) was Bishop of Tournai from 1385 to 1391 and from 1399 to 1401 and Bishop of Basel from 1393 to 1399 .

Life

Wilhelm came from Ghent , he studied law and led Flemish embassies to the court of the English King Richard II in 1382 and 1383. In 1385 he was appointed Bishop of Tournai and consecrated on July 9, 1385 in Hadham near London. However, he only managed to assert himself in the Ghent area, in 1390 he was also expelled from there. In 1391 Pope Boniface IX gave birth to him . resigned from his office and appointed him Bishop of Basel in 1393. The Basel cathedral chapter did not recognize the appointment and elected the Basel cathedral provost Konrad Münch von Landskron in August 1391 . Wilhelm, who never entered his diocese, was reappointed Bishop of Tournai in 1399 after negotiations between the Pope and the city of Basel. Since a return to his Flemish bishopric was not possible, he worked as auxiliary bishop in London. He died in 1406 at the latest.
